WAKE UP! is a subversive exhibition installed at Loyola Marymount University in 2015.

Virtually everything that we encounter in our lives has been doused in oil. Fossil fuels contaminate our drinking water, oxygen, food, medicine, clothes, and other vital necessities. Consequently, fossil fuel production leads directly to rising global temperatures, the elimination of native species, and an overall increase of ecological catastrophes around the world. The culpable conglomerates such as British Petroleum, Chevron, Shell, and Exxon Mobile continue to engineer global warming in spite of long-lasting evidence linking the burning of fossil fuels to ecological destruction. We have already witnessed the earth warming one degree since the Industrial Revolution and scientists anticipate even higher temperatures in the pipeline of our near future. The world’s leading climate research also shows that in order to avoid a guaranteed climate crises, rising global temperatures must be curbed to two degrees Celsius. Not a single culprit thus far is committed to undertake such preventative actions. The entire ecosystem henceforth is under collapse under the weight of climate change.

In an attempt to subvertise the oil and gas industry, WAKE UP! hijacks greenwashed corporate marketing campaigns with the ultimate intention of galvanizing a public and corporate response. The project utilizes subverted American flags, turned into visual metaphors illustrating the many environmental and societal atrocities committed by these industry giants around the globe. A number of other pieces were used in the project to display our dependence on oil and its byproducts.

Designed, manufactured, and independently published by Hassett Productions, we developed a first-of- and one-of-its-kind collaborative drawing activity, based on the Surrealist Parlor activity, Cadavre Exquis.
